Honoring mental health awareness month with “You Matter Day”

Big Lake Schools kicked Mental Health Awareness Month with You Matter Day on May 7, coming together to promote social-emotional wellness and spread the message that everyone matters.

During this annual districtwide recognition, students and staff wore green and partook in various wellness-focused classroom and school activities. The goal of the day was to eliminate stigma and open up conversation about mental wellbeing.

Some highlights included:

  • Chalk messages/affirmations greeted students on the sidewalk.
  • Lunchtime giveaways and photo-opts at the high school.
  • A special performance by the eighth grade band during the Middle School Band Concert held that day. The moving piece "Stay" emphasized suicide prevention and reminded listeners that it is possible to overcome adversity.

Guided by the Hornet Way, Big Lake Schools is all about creating a safe and welcoming environment where every student feels like they belong. We work to build this culture every day, and social-emotional learning is a big focus in our classrooms. This annual celebration is just one of the many ways we work to reinforce this important message.

Are you in need of wellness supports? There are lots of school and community resources available to support you.
